Search cost for a nearly optimal path in a binary tree

چکیده

Consider a binary tree, to the vertices of which are assigned independent Bernoulli random variables with mean p ≤ 1/2. How many of these Bernoullis one must look at in order to find a path of length n from the root which maximizes, up to a factor of 1− , the sum of the Bernoullis along the path? In the case, p = 1/2 (the critical value for nontriviality), it is shown to take Θ( −1n) steps. In the case p < 1/2, the number of steps is shown to be at least n · exp(const −1/2). This last result matches the known upper bound from [Ald98] in a certain family of subcases.

New Ways to Construct Binary Search Trees

We give linear-time algorithms for re-ordering and heightrestricting a binary search tree with only a small increase in cost, constructing a nearly optimal binary search tree given the rank by probability of each possible outcome, and height-restricting an optimal binary search tree when the increase in cost is restricted. Whereas most algorithms for constructing good binary search trees need t...

The estimated cost of a search tree on binary words

The problem of constructing a binary search tree for a set of binary words has wide applications in computer science, biology, mineralogy, etc. Shannon considered a similar statement in his optimal coding theorem. It is NP-complete to construct a tree of minimum cost [4]; therefore, the problem arises of finding simple algorithms for constructing nearly optimal trees. We show in this correspond...

A Best Possible Bound for the Weighted Path Length of Binary Search Trees

The weighted path length of optimum binary search trees is bounded above by Y'./3i + 2 a. + H where H is the entropy of the frequency distribution, /3i is the total weight of the internal nodes, and aj is the total weight of the leaves. This bound is best possible. A linear time algorithm for constructing nearly optimal trees is described. One of the popular methods for retrieving information b...

A Metaheuristic Algorithm for the Minimum Routing Cost Spanning Tree Problem

The routing cost of a spanning tree in a weighted and connected graph is defined as the total length of paths between all pairs of vertices. The objective of the minimum routing cost spanning tree problem is to find a spanning tree such that its routing cost is minimum. This is an NP-Hard problem that we present a GRASP with path-relinking metaheuristic algorithm for it. GRASP is a multi-start ...

An Efficient IP Address Lookup Scheme Using Balanced Binary Search with Minimal Entry and Optimal Prefix Vector

Although IP address lookup schemes using ternary content addressable memory (TCAM) can perform high speed packet forwarding, TCAM is much more expensive than ordinary memory in implementation cost. As a low-cost solution, binary search algorithms such as a binary trie or a binary search tree have been widely studied. This paper proposes an efficient IP address lookup scheme using balanced binar...
